refinery

One of the large European refineries of the ELF group of companies works in Feyzin . A serious accident occurred there in 1966. Propane gas escaped from a leak and was ignited by sparks from a passing vehicle. Several propane tanks exploded in a row. This disaster was considered the first major post-war industrial disaster in France and the term BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion) , a gas explosion of an expanding boiling liquid, established itself in the French press. There were 18 fatalities, mostly firefighters.
