Chaponnay is a small French commune with 4273 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Rhône in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

The village was first mentioned in the 10th century with the words "in valle Camponiaco" . At that time, Guillaume von Chaponnay was the mayor. Until December 31, 1967, the municipality belonged to the Isère department .

Since 1984 there has been a town partnership with the German community of Steinhausen an der Rottum .
