Messimy is about ten kilometers west-southwest of Lyon on the Garon River . Messimy is surrounded by Vaugneray in the north and north-west, Brindas in the north and north-east, Soucieu-en-Jarrest in the south and south-east, Thurins in the south and south-west, Yzeron in the west.

The commune belongs to the Coteaux du Lyonnais wine-growing region .
