history

20th century

Rue Norbert Kugler, Vénissieux

The Vichy regime established a collective and prison camp, the Camp de Vénissieux , on the site of the freight and marshalling yard ( Dépôt SNCF ), site l'Arsenal , from which Jewish people of non-French origin from all over the southeast and Eastern France to the Drancy assembly camp , from where the trains went directly to Auschwitz. The camp became known because allied Resistance and Christian groups succeeded in sabotage in August 1942, the night before they were deported to Drancy, in removing and thus saving all 108 children; quite a few adults were also able to flee. The sabotage affected the local electricity network, which was completely switched off, which meant that the barbed wire fence around the camp became dead and could be cut. Madeleine Barot was involved in the action on the part of the Christians . In Vénissieux, a street was named after the German resistance fighter Norbert Kugler .

Vénissieux was the capital of the two cantons of Vénissieux-Nord and Vénissieux-Sud, which existed until 2015 .

population

The population structure of the municipality changed radically when the large housing estate Minguettes with over 9,000 residential units was built in the 1960s , which became the residential area for numerous guest workers from the industry and other immigrants , who first came from Italy , Spain and Portugal , later mainly from the Maghreb . In the 1980s, a kind of civil rights movement of Maghrebian immigrants and their descendants ( beurs ) emerged here , who fought against racism and discrimination and organized the marche des beurs , a star march on Paris in which over 60,000 people took part. Today more than half of the city's residents are immigrants and it has a very high Muslim population. It is considered one of the strongholds of fundamentalist Islam in France .
