In the following years Gonalons could hardly fight for a regular place. On September 29, 2009 he made his European debut when he came on as a substitute for Miralem Pjanić in the group stage of the Champions League in the 4-0 win of the Lyonnais against VSC Debrecen in the 57th minute .

Gonalons scored his first goal in the UEFA Champions League on October 20, 2009. In the group game against Liverpool he was substituted on for the injured Cris in the 42nd minute and scored the goal for 1: 1 in the 72nd minute; Olympique Lyon surprisingly won the game 2-1. Throughout the season, the Lyonnais were involved in the league fight for the championship fight, but lost it to Olympique Marseille . In the Champions League you made it to the semi-finals; there they failed at the top German club Bayern Munich .

He also won the French cup competition .

At the beginning of July 2017 Gonalons signed a four-year contract with the Italian club AS Roma . However, since he could not prevail at AS Roma and only played 16 games, the Frenchman was awarded to FC Sevilla in the 2018/19 season.
