Sidney Rodrique Noukpo Govou (born July 27, 1979 in Le Puy-en-Velay ) is a former French football player who was under contract at Olympique Lyon and was a French national player during his career.
Club career
Sidney Govou, whose parents come from Benin , began his career with the amateur club ES Aiglons Briviste and moved to Olympique Lyonnais in 1996 at the age of 17. There he got a professional contract in July 1999 and made his debut in the senior team in January 2000 in the 2-1 defeat against AJ Auxerre . He played three more games in the 1999/2000 season, where he, like Thierry Henry before , moved from the wing position to the top. He first drew attention on the European stage when he scored two goals against FC Bayern Munich in the 2000/01 season . After the sale of Steve Marlet , he came into the starting lineup for the first time. He scored ten goals this season, including one on the last matchday against RC Lens , which gave Olympique Lyon the championship title and the league cup for the first time. Seven more championship titles followed in the years 2002 to 2008. With his goal in the French Cup final in 2008, the double victory was made perfect for the first time in the club's history. Govous won 1-0 in extra time to beat Paris Saint-Germain .
After his contract was not renewed, Sidney Govou moved in July 2010 to the Greek double winner Panathinaikos Athens , with whom he signed a two-year contract. For the 2011/2012 season he moved back to the French Ligue 1 for promoted FC Évian Thonon Gaillard . The former international signed a two-year contract. On March 10, 2012, Govou tore the Achilles tendon of his left foot in the league game against FC Sochaux, which put him out of action for the rest of the season. Almost one year later to the day, Govou was seriously injured again on March 16, 2013. During the away game against Lille OSC, he suffered a ruptured patellar tendon and a broken kneecap. In January 2014, the now contractless Govou joined the fourth division Monts d'Or Azergues Chasselay , where Ludovic Giuly was another ex-national player.
From June 2015 he played at short notice for the US club FC Miami City Champions.
National team
Before Sidney Govou reached the final of the U-21 European Championship with the French U-21 national team in 2002 , he played in various youth national teams. He made his senior national team debut on August 21, 2002 in a 1-1 draw against Tunisia. Also in the Confederations Cup in 2003, which France won, he was used three times and scored one goal. He played four games in qualifying for the European Championship, but was not used at the European Championship itself despite being nominated. In qualifying for the 2006 World Cup, he was mostly just a spectator.
Due to an injury ( broken tibia and fibula ) in a test match against China by Djibril Cissé , Govou was nominated for the 2006 World Cup in Germany . His first World Cup appearance was in the game against Togo in Cologne on June 23 , when he came on for Franck Ribéry . In the round of 16 against Spain he was substituted on for Florent Malouda .
At the European Championship finals in 2008 he was again part of the French squad . He played 75 minutes in the group stage in the 4-1 defeat against Netherlands before coach Raymond Domenech replaced him with Nicolas Anelka . In the decisive group game against Italy , Govou played 66 minutes before he was replaced again for Anelka. France was eliminated as the bottom of the group.
Media career
After the end of his career as a player, Gouvou started working for the television channel Canal + in 2015 as an expert on football broadcasts and as host of the interview series “La Mi-Temps de Sidney” (German: Sidneys Halftime).
