Career as a player

societies

Beginnings

Henry, son of a Guadeloupian father and a Martinican mother, had been prepared for a career as a professional footballer since childhood. He first played for a club in the Paris suburb of Les Ulis , then from 1990 to 1992 at the French national training center INF Clairefontaine and until 1993 at FC Versailles. From 1993 he stormed for AS Monaco , which had signed him in 1990. There he made his debut in the French first division in 1994 . In January 1999, Henry moved to Juventus Turin , where he could not cope and even had to play as a full-back at times.

In August 1999, just eight months after signing Juventus, he moved to London for Arsenal . There he has scored at least 17 goals per season since his first season and is still the most successful striker in the club's history.

Thierry Henry made his breakthrough at Arsenal in the 2001/02 season, when he was the top scorer for the first time in his career with 24 goals . Three more awards of this kind were to follow. In 2003 he was awarded the Golden Shoe for the first time as the top goalscorer in Europe and in the same year came second in the election for FIFA World Player of the Year , behind his French compatriot Zinédine Zidane . In 2004 he finished fourth in the European Footballer of the Year election and second again in the FIFA World Player of the Year election, this time behind Ronaldinho . However, he was named England and France Footballer of the Year in 2003, 2004 and 2006 .

On October 18, 2005, he set a new goal record with a brace in the Champions League against Sparta Prague : his second goal against Prague was also the 186th goal in his 302nd game for Arsenal, breaking the long-standing record of Arsenal Legend Ian Wright , who scored 185 hits for the Gunners in his career. For the 2005/06 season he succeeded Patrick Vieira as Arsenal captain.

In 2006 he was voted Footballer of the Year in England by English journalists for the third time in his career, something no other player has achieved before him. In the same season he extended his contract with Arsenal for another four years; Arsenal's vice-president David Dein suggested offers to replace Henry from other clubs in the amount of 50 million pounds, or about 73.5 million euros.

Henry has scored 226 goals in 369 competitive appearances for Arsenal, making him the current record goalscorer for Arsenal. As a result of this achievement, Arsenal FC unveiled a life-size bronze statue of the attacker in front of the local Emirates Stadium as part of the celebrations to mark its 125th anniversary on December 9, 2011 .

FC Barcelona

In June 2007, Henry moved to FC Barcelona for an estimated fee of around 24 million euros . There he signed a four-year contract. In his first season in the highest Spanish league , the Frenchman scored twelve goals in 30 league games. He was also used ten times in the UEFA Champions League and scored two goals. This season was marked by back problems for him, due to injuries he was out of many games. The second season at FC Barcelona was positive for him, with Barça winning the Spanish Cup , the championship and the Champions League. This was the first Champions League win in Henry's career.

After the 2009/10 season, in which he only scored four goals in 21 games, Henry left FC Barcelona by mutual agreement a year before his regular contract expired.

New York Red Bulls and brief return to Arsenal

Henry at the 2013 MLS All-Star Game

On July 14, 2010 it was announced that Henry would join the New York Red Bulls in the MLS . This makes him the second designated player in the ranks of the Red Bulls after Juan Pablo Ángel . On his first appearance on July 23, 2010, Henry scored a goal for New York in a friendly against Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur . His first game in Major League Soccer ( MLS ) was played on July 31, 2010 in a 2-2 draw against Houston Dynamo , where he made two goals possible for Juan Pablo Ángel. Henry himself met four weeks later for the first time: on August 28 against San Jose Earthquakes to the 2-0 final result.

After Juan Pablo Ángel left the Red Bulls for the 2011 season , Henry became the new team captain.

His base salary was 3.7 million euros per year.

After Henry had trained at Arsenal again since the end of the 2011 season, the club confirmed on January 6, 2012 that he would be returning to his old club in London on loan for two months to help out the strikers who had been eliminated by the 2012 African Cup To replace Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh . In his first competitive appearance for the Gunners on January 9, 2012 in the FA Cup , the late substitute "homecomer" scored the goal of the day to beat Leeds United 1-0 . In his third league game, he supposedly scored his first Premier League goal since returning in a 7-1 runaway win against Blackburn Rovers . However, months later the goal was only awarded to an opponent as an own goal by the so-called "Dubious Goal Commission". So it was only his winning goal against Sunderland AFC on February 11 that became his only Premier League goal and his 228th goal in Arsenal's shirt. Henry played for Arsenal for the last time on February 15, 2012 in the Champions League game against AC Milan before returning to New York.

On December 1, 2014, Henry announced that he would not renew his year-end contract. He left the club as the best assists (42) and second best goalscorer (51) in the club's history. On December 16, 2014, Henry announced that he had ended his 20-year professional career. He then worked as a TV expert for the British pay broadcaster Sky Sports .

National team

In the French national team , he made his debut on October 11, 1997 against South Africa (2-1).

Henry participated in eight major tournaments for France. At the 1998 World Cup in his own country, he scored three goals in six games. The striker scored once in the group stage against South Africa and twice against Saudi Arabia . Henry was not used in the final for the 3-0 win and winning the World Cup against Brazil .

At the Euro 2000 in Belgium and the Netherlands, Henry scored three goals in five games. In the preliminary round he scored one goal each against Denmark and the Czech Republic . In the further course of the tournament he was able to equalize in the semifinals against Portugal to 1-1. Zinédine Zidane scored the 2-1 penalty in extra time to make it into the European Championship final. France won 2-1 after extra time and became European champions .

At the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, Henry could not score a goal, as did the entire French team. In the second group game against Uruguay , Henry was excluded after 25 minutes for gross foul play and was then suspended. France were eliminated as defending champions in the group stage.

In 2003, Henry took part in the Confederations Cup in his home country . In the final, France beat Cameroon 1-0 thanks to a golden goal from Henry. Henry was named the tournament's top scorer and best player.

One year later, EURO 2004 followed in Portugal. Here Henry could score two goals in four games. In the third group game against Switzerland , he scored two goals to make it 3-1. After successfully surviving the group stage, France were eliminated 1-0 against eventual European champions Greece in the quarter-finals.

At the 2006 World Cup in Germany, Henry was runner-up with Les Bleus . The striker scored three goals in seven games, two of them in the group matches against South Korea and Togo . France reached the round of 16 in second place in the group. In the quarter-finals against Brazil , Henry scored the decisive 1-0. In the final, Henry was replaced by Sylvain Wiltord and thus did not take part in the penalty shoot-out that the French lost to Italy .

The EM 2008 in Austria and Switzerland was a disappointment for the French national team with Henry. Henry could only be used in the second group game due to an injury, he scored the connecting goal to 1: 2 against the Netherlands ; However, France lost 4-1. In the group stage playoff against Italy, France lost 2-0 and were eliminated from the bottom of the group.

Henry hit the headlines on November 18, 2009 in the play-off second leg of the 2010 World Cup qualification . After France won the first leg in Ireland 1-0, the guests at the Stade de France were in the lead after regular time with the same result, so it came to extra time. In the 103rd minute, Henry took a hand in the penalty area, he admitted that immediately after the final whistle. The ball passed on by Henry after the handball on foot was used by William Gallas as the decisive goal for France's World Cup qualification.
He was nominated for the French World Cup squad , but finally lost his role as a regular player there.

In the French national team, Henry is the record scorer with 51 goals. As a substitute for the World Cup match against Uruguay on June 11, 2010 , he is the first French player to appear at four World Cups. On July 15, 2010, he announced the end of his career in the blue jersey.
