The basic concept of the Show Racism the Red Card campaign was taken up in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Germany and Ireland through the establishment of further associations.

Mission statement

The declared aim of the English show Racism the Red Card Initiative is to convey an anti-racism message to young people. This is done through role models who predominantly, but not exclusively, consist of footballers.

Background and activities

The origins of Show Racism the Red Card in Great Britain go back to 1995: with the help of a donation of £ 50 from Newcastle United's goalkeeper, Shaka Hislop , a local anti-racism campaign grew in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne . The campaign was founded by Ged Grebby, an active member of the Youth Against Racism Association in Europe. The international anti-racism campaign was sending educational packages to schools at the time and caught the attention of Hislop, who was immediately enthusiastic, donated £ 50 and ordered more copies for the future. The basic idea of the Show Racism the Red Card campaign was born from Hislop's positive response. Political education was combined with the role model function of professional footballers in order to ensure better awareness-raising of young people in Great Britain on the subject of racism. The basic concept was taken up by branches in Whitley Bay, Glasgow and Cardiff in Great Britain as well as in Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Germany and Denmark and made internationally known through different working methods. The common goal of the campaigns is to get the message across and educate them through sport, supported by various local resources.

“When I was filling up at my gas station, a few boys started shouting racist slurs. After a while, one of them recognized me and told his friends. Then they came over and asked me for an autograph. That really hurt. "

- Footballer Shaka Hislop on the experience that inspired him to participate in the show Racism the Red Card campaign. At the moment he was described, he was only perceived as “a simple black person”.

The main resource of the international show Racism the Red Card campaigns is an English-language DVD with the protagonists Thierry Henry , Derek Ferguson , Mustapha Hadji , Ryan Giggs , Rio Ferdinand , Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto'o . The top-class footballers report in "A Safe Place" on racism against asylum seekers , refugees and Islamophobia . The message is intended to sensitize children and young people from the age of eight to the issue of racism and also to provide teachers with new points of discussion for further activities. The campaign also works with the “Out of Site” education package. This should point out racism against Sinti and Roma and refugees.

education

The main part of the work of SRTRC takes up regular workshops on the prevention of racism and discrimination in cooperation with professional sports clubs. Young people are invited to the stadiums and work out an anti-racism message with their sporting role models. The workshops are offered in North East, South and South East England for young people and adults. In most cases, soccer and fitness sessions with ex-soccer pros such as Gary Bennett , Gordon Dean , John Anderson , Curtis Fleming , Olivier Bernard , Luther Blissett , Paul Mortimer and Leroy Rosenior accompany SRTRC's events. SRTRC holds an annual competition for students in the UK, giving them the opportunity to create their own anti-racism work in the form of posters, poems, animations and films. After all applications have been submitted, a jury will select the winners and hold the award ceremonies in football stadiums of well-known English professional clubs. Popular soccer players like Theo Walcott have already given awards to the winning students. It is noteworthy that a school from Ouston, not far from St. James Park in Newcastle upon Tyne, has already won the annual SRTRC anti-racism competition twice.
