Neil Shaka Hislop (born February 22, 1969 in Hackney , London ) is a former football player born in England with ancestors from Trinidad and Tobago . Hislop last played at FC Dallas in the American Major League Soccer and was the goalkeeper of the national team in his home country for many years .

Club career

Hislop began his career on the university team at Howard University in Washington, DC In 1992, he received his first professional contract with Reading FC . With Reading he played in the third English division and rose as a master in the second division in 1994 . Hislop became a crowd favorite at Reading and narrowly missed promotion to the Premier League in the following season when they lost 4-3 to the Bolton Wanderers in the play-off final .

Hislop then moved to Newcastle United for the transfer fee of 1,575,000 pounds . After he was initially a regular goalkeeper in St. James' Park , he soon found himself in a four-way battle with Pavel Srníček , Shay Given and Steve Harper for the goalkeeper post. In order to continue to get regular match practice, he moved to West Ham United in 1998 on a free transfer .

Also at West Ham United he was first goalkeeper and reached fifth place in the Premier League with the club in 1999, qualifying for the UI Cup , which was won the following season, and thus qualified for the UEFA Cup . But due to the additional burden of the international appearances, the club played against relegation and coach Harry Redknapp was dismissed in May 2001. Hislop could then no longer hold his regular place and came in the 2001/2002 season only to twelve missions whereupon he moved to the second division FC Portsmouth free of charge . Portsmouth coach at the time was Redknapp. With Hislop as regular goalkeeper, the club rose to the top of the league as a sovereign champion and was able to easily establish itself in midfield in the 2003/2004 season.

After Harry Redknapp's dismissal in December 2004, Hislop lost his regular place again, this time to the Greek Konstantinos Chalkias , and his contract, which was running out at the end of the season, was not renewed. His path led him back to West Ham, with whom he reached the FA Cup final in the 2005/06 season . However , he could not prevent the 1: 3 defeat on penalties (3: 3 after 120 minutes) against Liverpool . He ended his career in the USA at FC Dallas . In mid-2007 he announced his retirement from professional sport.

National team

Hislop had an appearance in the English U21 national team, but then decided for Trinidad and Tobago. In June 1998 he made his national team debut in a 2-0 win over Jamaica.

With the Soca Warriors he qualified for the first time in the history of the country for a soccer world championship , but was only a substitute for Kelvin Jack in the two decisive play-off games against Bahrain . Hislop was also in the final squad for Trinidad and Tobago at the 2006 World Cup, where he was only supposed to be on the bench. However, after an old calf injury broke open with number 1 Kelvin Jack while warming up before the first group game against Sweden , he was used. He was instrumental in the 0-0 draw against the Swedes by holding several shots on goal. The German television commentary described his performance as “outstanding”, while the Swedish press wrote of a “fiasco” for its own team. In the second group game against England , Hislop held outstanding until the 84th minute. Hislop could not prevent a Peter Crouch header. In stoppage time, Steven Gerrard overcame Trinidad's goalkeeper with an unsustainable long-range shot to make it 2-0. In the last group game against Paraguay , Kelvin Jack was in goal.

He made a total of 26 international matches.

social commitment

Hislop is an ambassador for Show Racism the Red Card .

“When I was filling up at my gas station, a few boys started shouting racist slurs. After a while, one of them recognized me and told his friends. Then they came over and asked me for an autograph. That really hurt. "
