Didier Yves Drogba Tébily (born March 11, 1978 in Abidjan ) is a former Ivorian football player . He is the record scorer for the Ivorian national team , for which he played from 2002 to 2014. He has been voted Africa's Footballer of the Year twice .

For most of his career, Drogba was active for Chelsea and is closely associated with the London club. He was under contract with Chelsea between 2004 and 2012 and again from 2014 to 2015. For the Blues Drogba completed 254 Premier League games , scoring 104 goals and 63 assists . Drogba won the English championship four times with Chelsea. In 2012 he decided the final of the UEFA Champions League , Chelsea's greatest success ever, with the equalizer and the final penalty in the subsequent penalty shoot-out . At the age of 32, Drogba was the Premier League's oldest top scorer with 29 goals in the 2009-10 season. This record was only broken in the 2019/20 season with 23 goals from Jamie Vardy at the age of 33.

Didier Drogba was born in 1978 in Abidjan , the capital of the Ivory Coast at the time , as the son of a bank clerk and a typist. At the age of five, his parents sent him to France , where he lived with his uncle, the professional footballer Michel Goba . In 1986 he joined the youth team of the USL Dunkerque club .

In 1991 his entire family moved to France. In 1999 he signed his first professional contract at UC Le Mans .

Beginnings

At the beginning of his career at Le Mans and Guingamp, Drogba was still playing as a right-back , but his talent for the offensive was soon recognized. 2002 wanted him Jose Mourinho already for FC Porto win, but his budget was not enough to commit to Drogba, so he remained at Guingamp.

Although he initially wanted to stay in Marseille, he then moved to Chelsea, where he initially wore the shirt number 15. Later he got the number 11. Under José Mourinho , the coach of the London club at the time, he won the English championship in 2005 and 2006. In the 2006/07 season he won the League Cup and the FA Cup with Chelsea. In both finals he scored the decisive goals for Chelsea.

In 2008 he reached the final of the Champions League with Chelsea , in which Chelsea met Manchester United and lost on penalties. Since Drogba had received the red card in the 116th minute for assault , he could no longer be used in the penalty shoot-out.

Galatasaray Istanbul

In the winter transfer period of the 2012/13 season, Drogba signed a contract with Turkish first division club Galatasaray Istanbul that ran until June 30, 2014. Return to Chelsea

Change to Montreal

Drogba qualified for the 2006 World Cup with the Ivorian national team and scored the Ivory Coast's first World Cup goal in the first game against the Argentinian national soccer team with a 1: 2 goal.
