Tarak Dhiab ( Arabic طارق ذياب Tariq Dhiyab , DMG Ṭāriq Ḏiyāb ; * July 15, 1954 in Tunis ) is a former Tunisian football player , coach and current minister for youth and sport.

career

Dhiab is considered one of the greatest footballers in Africa. The midfielder has been praised for his game intelligence; he is considered one of the best playmakers in Africa of all time.

In 1977 he was named Africa's Footballer of the Year - as the only player in his country to date . In the same year, the Tunisian national team qualified for a world championship for the first time . At the 1978 World Cup , the team failed with him as a playmaker with only one defeat against Poland just behind Germany . He played all three games.

In the mid- 1980s he moved to Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia only for Espérance Tunis , with whom he celebrated several championship titles and cup victories , where he was voted best player.

After he had already announced his resignation from the national team, he returned again in 1987 and qualified for the 1988 Olympic Games . In 1990 he finally said goodbye to the national team after a 1-1 draw with England .

In 1992 he ended his career with his home club Espérance Sportive in a friendly against Juventus Turin . Since then he has been active with the Tunisian Association and as a football expert with Al Jazeera .

After the revolution in his home country on January 14, 2011, Tarak Dhiab became Minister of Youth and Sports in the government of Hamadi Jebali after the first democratic elections in October 2011.
