The club was founded on January 15, 1919 and has played at the Stade El Menzah stadium ever since . The derby is the biggest game in Tunisian club football.
history
Mohamed Zaoui and Hédi Kallel founded the association Café de l'Espérance in a café together with the Frenchman Louis Montassier, who became the club's first president . L'Espérance Sportive de Tunis was officially registered on January 15, 1919. The club colors were initially white and green. In 1920 a young high school student, Chadly Zouiten , joined the club , bringing a set of red and yellow stripe jerseys; since then these have been the club colors of L'Espérance. Zouiten became club president in 1923 and remained so for four decades. During his presidency, the club's football team initially played lower class until they were promoted to the top division, the Division d'Honneur , in 1936 . This season, L'Espérance also reached the Tunisian Cup final, but had to admit defeat Stade Gaulois de Tunis . In 1939 they won their first title: L'Espérance won the cup by beating Étoile Sportive du Sahel 3-1 in the final . The CAF Champions League was won in 1994 and 2011, the Afro-Asian Cup in 1995 and the African Cup Winners' Cup in 1998 .
Although Espérance had become Tunisian national champion again in 2006, Hamdi Kasraoui was only one player from this club in the squad of the Tunisian national team under coach Roger Lemerre at the 2006 World Cup .
