Nabil Maâloul ( Arabic نبيل معلول, DMG Nabīl Maʿlūl ; * July 25, 1962 ) is a former Tunisian soccer player and current coach . He has been the national coach for Syria since March 2020.

Career

Maâloul began his career in 1981 with Espérance Tunis , where he stayed until 1989. At the 1988 Summer Olympics in Korean Seoul he reached the youngest player of his team with the national team to ninth place. Overall, he scored two goals in the group games. In 1989 he moved to the 2nd Bundesliga for Hannover 96 . He stayed there for two years and played a total of 28 competitive games in which he scored two goals. After returning to Espérance Tunis for three years, he moved to CA Bizert in 1994 , where he was only under contract for one year. In 1995 he moved to CA Tunis . In 1999, at the end of his career, he moved to Saudi Arabia to the Al-Ahli Club . In 2000 he ended his career at the age of 38.

At the 2006 World Cup in Germany , Maâloul was assistant coach of the Tunisian national soccer team . Since December 27, 2010 he has been the coach of the Tunisian record champions Espérance Tunis . In 2011 he won the championship and cup double with the team. On January 22, 2014, he was appointed to succeed Răzvan Lucescu at Al-Jaish in the Qatar Stars League . From 2014 to 2017 he was the coach of the Kuwaiti national soccer team , which was eliminated in the second round of qualification for the 2018 World Cup, also due to the suspension of the Kuwaiti Association. From 2017 to 2018 he was again the coach of the national team in his home country. From 2018 to 2019 he was the coach of the Qatari club Al Duhail . Maâloul has been the coach of the Syrian national soccer team since 2020 .

Oddities

Nabil Maâloul is one of the few footballers in Tunisian history who played for both Espérance Tunis and Club Africain Tunis . Both top clubs from the capital Tunis harbor one of the greatest rivalries in Arab and African football.
