Paulo César Carpegiani (born February 7, 1949 in Erechim , Rio Grande do Sul ) is a former Brazilian soccer player who now works as a coach.

Player career

society

Carpegiani began his footballing career at Internacional Porto Alegre in Rio Grande do Sul . There he played from 1970 to 1977. He won his first title in 1970 when he won the state championship in Rio Grande do Sul . In 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975 and 1976 further successes followed in the same competition. More important, however, was the triumph of the Campeonato Brasileiro de Futebol , the Brazilian championship, in 1975 and 1976. With the success of 1975, the team was able to win the coveted cup for the first time in the club's history. During this time Carpegiani was one of the most important players in the team. In 1977 he moved to league competitor Flamengo Rio de Janeiro and in 1980 was again Brazilian football champion. He also secured the state championship of Rio de Janeiro in 1978 and 1979 with the black and reds , with the team winning the competition in 1979 unbeaten. After his third all-Brazilian championship, Carpegiani said goodbye to active football.

National team

From 1974 to 1979 Carpegiani was appointed several times in the squad of the Brazilian national team. In 1974 he was in the squad for the World Cup in Germany. At the World Cup, he made five appearances in the dress of his home country. In 1979 he was in Brazil's squad at the 1979 Copa America

Coaching career

After his resignation, Carpegiani became a coach. In 1981 he took over the position of head coach at Flamengo Rio de Janeiro . He led this into the glorious 80s with many titles. It started in 1981 by winning the Copa Libertadores, which is comparable to the European Champions League . In the final, the opponent was CD Cobreloa from Chile. The final had to be decided in three games. After 2: 1, 0: 1 and 2: 0, Flamengo left the field as the winner of this tournament for the first time in the club's history. The only shooter in all three matches was Brazilian legend Zico . In the decisive game on November 23, 1981, the chief referee drew the red card five times . As a result of winning the cup, the club played on December 13, 1981 the game for the World Cup against Liverpool . Carpegiani secured this 3-0 with goals from João Batista Nunes and Adílio .

The following year, the football teacher won the Campeonato Brasileiro de Futebol for the first time as a coach . In 1982 Carpegiani moved to Saudi Arabia, where he was in charge of Al-Nasr . There he was less successful and in 1985 he was drawn back home, where he was hired by his former club Internacional Porto Alegre . Two years later, the coach was introduced to Palmeiras São Paulo , but was fired that same year and soon afterwards head coach at Náutico Capibaribe .

Carpegiani became national coach of Paraguay through many other stations . This he led to the 1998 World Cup in France. There they survived the preliminary round, but were eliminated in the round of 16 against eventual tournament winners France with 0: 1 after a golden goal . Last year they took part in the 1997 Copa America , where the team also lost out to the eventual winner, the Brazilian team . Subsequently, Carpegiani devoted himself to club teams again, before he was introduced in 2003 as coach of the national team of Kuwait . After just one year, before the 2004 Asian Cup , he left the association.

In 2009 the former national player became the new coach at EC Vitória with whom he won the Bahia State Championship . For the following season he was in charge of Atletico Paranaense .
