Erechim (also Erexim ) is a city (Portuguese: município ) in the north of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul not far from the border with Santa Catarina .

105,059 inhabitants live in an area of ​​430.76 km² (2018 estimate). The inhabitants are predominantly of Italian, German, Polish and Jewish descent.

history

In 1908 the first settlers of European descent came to the area of ​​today's city and founded the settlement on the railway line that runs from Rio Grande do Sul to the state of São Paulo . The settlement was initially named a district of the city of Passo Fundo . On April 30, 1918, she was raised to the status of Município .
