Passo Fundo , officially Portuguese Município de Passo Fundo , is a city with 198,799 inhabitants (estimate as of July 1, 2017) in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil . It is located about 280 km northwest of Porto Alegre . Neighboring are the places Pontão and Coxilha in the north, Mato Castelhano in the east, Marau in the south, Ernestina and Santo Antônio do Planalto in the southwest and Carazinho in the west. Originally, Passo Fundo was part of the Cruz Alta municipality .
