Cruz Alta , officially Portuguese Município de Cruz Alta , German Hochkreuz , is a city with around 60,700 inhabitants in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil . It is located about 350 km northwest of the capital Porto Alegre .

Neighboring are the towns of Pejuçara , Santa Bárbara do Sul , Ibirubá (N), Fortaleza dos Valos , Quinze de Novembro (O), Tupanciretã , Júlio de Castilhos (S), Ijuí , Augusto Pestana and Jóia (W).

history

When the city was founded, the municipality was responsible for around 60,000 km², around 20% of the territory of Rio Grande do Sul. From the 19th century, 242 independent municipalities emerged from the former municipal area.
