Ijuí is a city in the southernmost Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul . The city, which was founded in 1890, has approx. 79,000 inhabitants (as of 2008).
history
Ijuhy colony was established on October 19, 1890. The name comes from the Guaraní and means "pure water". The settlement was led by Augusto Pestana , who also became the city's first mayor in 1912. The German-Jewish immigrant Robert Löw from Prague founded the German-language newspaper Die Serra-Post in 1911 . When Brazil entered the war in 1917, it became the Correio Serrano .
