The Cruz Alta Department is located in the east of the Tucumán Province in northwest Argentina and is one of 17 administrative units in the province. It is bordered by the Burruyacú department to the north, the Santiago del Estero province to the east, the Leales department to the south and the Lules , Capital and Tafí Viejo departments to the west .

After the department Capital, Cruz Alta is the most populous department of Tucumán with 162,240 inhabitants. The two most important municipalities are the departmental capital Banda del Río Salí and Alderetes .

economy

A number of important industrial companies have settled in the west of the Cruz Alta department. The most important are the largest sugar factory in the province, Ingenio Concepción , and the subsidiary of the Swedish truck manufacturer Scania . The Aceitera General Deheza (AGD) and Refinor (Refinerías del Norte) are also important . The Zona Franca de Tucumán is located in the vicinity of ladenia . The east of the department is mainly used for agriculture, with sugar cane cultivation dominating.

Transport links

The Ruta Nacional 9 crosses the department and forms the main transport link between the provincial capital San Miguel de Tucumán and the province of Santiago del Estero . Teniente Benjamín Matienzo International Airport, the only airport in the province of Tucumán, is located in the municipality of Cevil Pozo .
