The Juan Bautista Alberdi department is located in the southwest of the Tucumán Province in northwest Argentina and is one of 17 administrative units in the province. It borders in the north with the department Río Chico , in the east with the department Graneros , in the south with the department La Cocha and in the west with the province Catamarca . The department and capital were named after the politician, lawyer and writer from Tucumán, Juan Bautista Alberdi .

Economy and tourism
The Ruta Provincial 308 connects the capital of the department Ciudad Alberdi with the reservoir Escaba, the main tourist attraction of the department. One of the largest bat colonies on the American continent lives here. The reservoir is also used to generate electricity and the Ambursen dam is one of the highest in the world.
