The Chicligasta Department is located in the southwestern part of the Tucumán Province in northwest Argentina and is one of 17 administrative units in the province. In the north it is bordered by the department of Monteros , in the east by the department of Simoca , in the south by the department of Río Chico and in the west by the province of Catamarca .

economy
Agriculture is the department's primary source of income. Sugar cane is the most important crop that is processed in Chicligasta's two sugar factories. There is also the cultivation of potatoes and vegetables. There are citrus plantations in the Alpachiri area.
