The Departamento Capital is located in the center of the Provínz Tucumán in northwest Argentina and is one of 17 administrative units in the province.

It borders on the Tafí Viejo Department in the north, the Cruz Alta Department in the east, the Lules Department in the south and the Yerba Buena Department in the west .

The capital of the department, San Miguel de Tucumán , is also the capital of the province of Tucumán .

According to the last census, the Capital Department had 527,607 inhabitants ( INDEC , 2001). According to estimates by INDEC from 2005, the population has risen to 576,700 inhabitants.
