The Río Chico department is located in the southwest of the Tucumán Province in northwest Argentina and is one of 17 administrative units in the province.

It is bordered by the Chicligasta Department in the north, the Simoca Department in the east, the Juan Bautista Alberdi Department in the south and the Catamarca Province in the west .

The capital and urban center of the department is Aguilares.
