The competition started on January 17, 1982 in its new season and ended on April 25, 1982. The championship was organized by the national association CBF . At the end of the season, the Flamengo Rio de Janeiro celebrated its third title, which was achieved within four years. The championship was peppered with numerous national players such as Zico , Leandro , Bebeto , etc. a.
After the season, as every year, awards were given to the best players of the year. The “ Golden Ball ”, awarded by the sports magazine Placar , went to Zico from the master CR Flamengo . The top scorer was also Zico with 21 goals.

The 38 best teams of the state championships were initially determined as participants. The field was then filled with the defending champion of the 1981 season . The round was completed with the champions of Serie B 1981 Campo Grande AC . Furthermore, the best four teams of the Taça de Prata (second division) were added in 1982, but they did not take part until the second round of the competition.
The participating teams were initially divided into eight main groups, which played the preliminary round matches side by side.
1st round :
In groups A to H , the teams played in groups of five with a round trip. The best three in a group went straight to the next round. The fourth placed in each group went to an elimination round.
Elimination round :
The eight teams played against each other once in four pairings. The winners of these games completed the field of participants in the second round.
2nd round :
In groups I to P , the teams played in groups of four with a round trip. The best two in a group went straight to the last sixteen.
Final round :
From the quarter-finals to the final, all games were played in home and return matches.
Total table:
An overall table was formed from the results of all games. This is used by the national association to calculate the perpetual best list.
After a tie back and forth between Bangu AC and SC Corinthians , SC Corinthians moved into the semi-finals due to the better performance in the round of 16.
The table only served to determine the placement of the individual teams in the season. It is made up of all the games played. In the sorting, reaching the respective final phase has priority over the points scored. The games from the elimination round were not taken into account.
