Taça Brasil 1961

The Taça Brasil (Brazil Cup) was the first national soccer competition in Brazil. The Taça was hosted by the Brazilian Sports Federation, the CBD , in 1962 . The 1962 Taça Brasil runner-up qualified for the 1963 Copa Campeones de América . This was due to the fact that the champions of Taça Brasil in 1962, FC Santos, had already qualified as defending champions of the Copa Campeones de América in 1962 .

The winners of the Taça Brasil were seen at the time as Campeões, as champions of Brazil. The CBF refused to officially recognize the clubs as Brazilian champions until 2010.

Season course

The competition started on September 5, 1962 in its season and ended on April 2, 1963. At the end of the season, FC Santos was able to defend the title and won it for the second time.

The top scorer was Coutinho from champions FC Santos with 7 goals .

Supreme victory

Attendees

18 clubs took part. The mode consisted of a kind of cup system. Participants were the winners of the 1961 state championships .

mode

After the first and second leg, only the number of wins counted, no other criteria. If both teams have won once, a playoff was played. If this did not result in a winner, the goal difference counted. If the comparison did not result in a winner, the decision was made by tossing a coin.

1st round: In the first round, the participants were divided into two regions according to their origin in order to keep travel distances and costs low. In the groups, the teams met in cup mode. The winners were determined in the first and second legs. The final winner of each group moved on to the final round.

Final round: The competition mode remained the same as in the first round. In this came the state championship of Rio de Janeiro of Botafogo FR and the state championship of São Paulo of FC Santos in the competition.
