The Taça Brasil (Brazil Cup) was the first national soccer competition in Brazil. The Taça was organized in 1968 by the Brazilian Sports Federation, the CBD . The champions and runners-up were qualified as participants in Copa Libertadores 1969 .

The 1968 competition was the last in this competition. As a similar one, the national cup called Copa do Brasil was launched in 1989 . However, this is not considered the successor to Taça Brasil. In 2010 the national association CBF officially recognized it as Brazilian champion.

Season course

The competition started its season on August 4, 1968 and ended on October 4, 1969. At the end of the season, the Botafogo FR won the title for the first time. The top scorer was Fernando Ferretti from the champions Botafogo FR with 9 goals .

Attendees

23 clubs took part. The mode consisted of a mixture of table and cup system. Participants were the winners of the State Championships in 1967 .

mode

After the first and second leg, only the number of wins counted, no other criteria. If both teams have won once, a playoff was played. If this did not result in a winner, the goal difference counted. If the comparison did not result in a winner, the decision was made by tossing a coin.

1st round: In the first round, the participants were divided into three regions according to their origin. In the groups, the teams met in table and cup mode. The winners were determined in the first and second legs.

Final round: In the final round, the defending champions of the Palmeiras São Paulo , the FC Santos as state champions of São Paulo and the Botafogo FR as state champions of Rio de Janeiro should enter the competition. The plan was for Palmeiras to take part from the quarter-finals and Santos from the semi-finals. But both canceled their participation. The clubs had also qualified for the Copa Libertadores in 1969 and saw their participation as endangered.

Final round

In the final round, the defending champions of the Palmeiras São Paulo , the FC Santos as state champions of São Paulo and the Botafogo FR as state champions of Rio de Janeiro should enter the competition. The plan was for Palmeiras to take part from the quarter-finals and Santos from the semi-finals. But both canceled their participation. The clubs had also qualified for the Copa Libertadores in 1969 and saw their participation as endangered.

The reason for this were delays in the round of 16 game between Botafogo and Metropol. After the first two games, each club had won a game. Botafogo had the better goal difference, but this did not count at the time, so a play-off was scheduled. According to the rules, this had to be played in the same stadium as the last game. Accordingly, the playoff should have taken place in the Metropol stadium. The game was scheduled for the evening of December 11, 1968. The game could not take place due to insufficient stadium lighting. Metropol refused to play the game at another venue.

The disputes over the playoff dragged on into the next year and was then scheduled for March 12, 1969 in Florianópolis . Metropol did not appear in the game. They justified it with the fact that too few players were available. Botafogo was then declared the winner by walkover . This decision was reversed shortly thereafter, after Metropol had agreed to play on April 2, 1969 in Rio de Janeiro for the playoff.

The playoff took place on the scheduled date. However, the game had to be interrupted in the 58th minute when the score was 1: 1 due to a storm. The game was not counted and a new playoff game two days later was scheduled for April 4th. Metropol protested against this because they considered the appointment to be too short-term. The protest was denied and Botafogo was declared the winner for walkover.

Closing table

The table only served to determine the placement of the individual teams in the season. At times it was used by the association to determine an eternal ranking list. It is made up of all the games played. In the sorting, reaching the respective final phase has priority over the points scored. In the event of a tie, first the wins scored, then the goals scored.
