The Campeonato Nacional de Clubes 1971 was the 15th season of the Brazilian soccer championship . It was the first championship that was officially ranked as such at the time. The previous competitions were not recognized until 2010.

Season course

The competition started its new season on August 17, 1971 and ended on December 19, 1971. The championship was organized by the national association CBD . At the end of the season, Atlético Mineiro celebrated its first title.

After the season, the sports magazine Placar awarded the Golden Ball to the best player of the year. The award went to Dirceu Lopes Mendes from Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte . The top scorer was Dario from champions Atlético Mineiro with 15 goals .

The games between September 4th and 7th were included in the scoring of the Taça Independência do Brasil 1971 . The winner here was São Paulo FC .

20 teams took part in the competition.

In contrast to the previous competition, the Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa 1970 , three other teams were founding members of the new competition: the Ceará SC , Sport Recife and América Mineiro . For the teams not taken into account, the association organized the Torneio Integração .

1st round: In the first round the 20 participants were divided into two groups. All participants in both groups played against each other once (19 games per team). The best six teams in each group advanced to the second round.

2nd round: Here the 12 teams met in three groups of four teams each. In the groups, the teams met each other on a return game. The best team in each group made it to the final round.

Final round: In the final round, the teams only met once. The best team from all three games became champions.

Total table: A total table was formed from the results of all games. This is used by the national association to calculate the perpetual best list.
