Telê Santana da Silva (born July 26, 1931 in Itabirito ( MG ), † April 21, 2006 in Belo Horizonte (MG)) was a Brazilian football player and coach . He first achieved international fame as the coach of the Brazilian national team at the World Championships in 1982 and 1986 . He had his greatest successes with São Paulo FC with whom he won the Copa Libertadores and the World Cup in 1992 and 93 .

career

Telê Santana began his career with Itabirense FC in his hometown. He later moved to Fluminense Rio de Janeiro , where he took over his first team, a youth team from Fluminense, as a coach from 1967.

He coached the Brazilian national team during the 1982 and 1986 World Cups . He ended his career with São Paulo FC in 1996 after leading the team to their peak in the first half of the 1990s.

With Atlético Mineiro he won the national championship of Minas Gerais in 1970 and in 1971 the first official Brazilian football championship . Between 1970 and 1976 he sat in the Atlético coaching bench 434 times, which is a club record.

Telê Santana died on April 21, 2006 in the Felicio Rocho Hospital in Belo Horizonte as a result of a colon infection and increasing problems with kidney function and breathing.
