Cláudio Pêcego de Moraes Coutinho (born January 5, 1939 in Dom Pedrito , † November 27, 1981 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian soccer coach who coached the Brazilian national soccer team between 1977 and 1980 . He died in a diving accident.
Life
Military career
Coutinho was born in 1939 in the small village of Dom Pedrito in the Rio Grande do Sul area on the Brazilian border with Uruguay and moved to Rio de Janeiro with his parents when he was four years old.
There he later attended military school and achieved the rank of captain of the artillery. He also graduated with a degree in sports science while in the army. In 1968 he represented the military school at a world congress that was held in the USA. There he met the American professor Kenneth H. Cooper , the inventor of the Cooper test . He invited him to the NASA Human Stress Laboratory .
Athletic career
In 1970 Coutinho was appointed to the coaching staff of the Brazilian squad for the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. He was the team's fitness trainer and presented the Coopertest there. After the tournament he worked as a consultant for the Peruvian national team and was technical coordinator for Brazil's Selecao at the 1974 World Cup in Germany. He then worked for the French Club Olympique de Marseille and Brazil's Olympic team, which finished fourth in Montreal in 1976 . In 1976 he also became the head coach of Flamengo .
His good reputation helped him get the job of head coach of the Seleção . He thus succeeded Osvaldo Brandãos . Brazil remained undefeated at the 1978 World Cup . Due to a poorer goal difference, which was mainly due to the scandalous game Argentina against Peru (6-0), Brazil only reached the game for third place, which they won 2-1 against Italy. In 1979 he joined Brazil at the 1979 Copa America and made it to the semi-finals. After the tournament he took over the coaching position at Flamengo again in 1979. Telê Santana had replaced him as head coach of the Seleção . With Flamengo he won the championship in 1980. In 1981, Coutinho then moved to Los Angeles Aztecs .
death
After the 1981 season, the experienced diver spent his home vacation in Rio de Janeiro. He dived near the Cagarras Islands at Ipanema Beach , where he had a fatal accident.
