Luiz Antonio Venker de Menezes (born July 11, 1962 in Passo do Sobrado , Rio Grande do Sul ) is a Brazilian football coach . From July 2010 to November 2012 he coached the Brazilian national team .

Career

Club coach

Menezes played as a defender for the southern Brazilian club Guarani de Venâncio Aires in the late 1970s and early 1980s. But he gave up his active career early on in order to be able to work as a coach. In the mid-1980s he was part of the coaching staff of SESI from Rio Grande do Sul, where he worked as a fitness trainer before he was hired in 1986 in the same position at his home club Guarani de Venâncio Aires. At EC Juventude and at SC Internacional from Porto Alegre , Menezes was able to gain further experience in the following years. In 1997 he took over the post of head coach at Venâncio Aires for the first time, which he occupied until 2002. After a brief interlude at Gremio Esportivo Brasil , he soon returned to leave the club again in 2003 and sign with Iraty Sport Club .

In the same year, the football coach moved to Clube 15 de Novembro from the southern Brazilian city of Campo Bom , with which he reached the final of the state championship in Rio Grande do Sul , but failed there. In 2004 the club came as a surprise team to the semi-finals of the Copa do Brasil .

Gremio Porto Alegre

Between 2004 and 2005 Menezes was brief coach of SER Caxias do Sul , before he was the new season 2005 coach of Gremio Porto Alegre . With his new club, he secured the first title of his coaching career with the state championship in Rio Grande do Sul and in 2005 won the championship in Série B and thus the direct resurgence. In the fight for the Brazilian championship in 2006 , the team was third behind FC São Paulo and SC Internacional and qualified for the Copa Libertadores . In the following year he repeated the success in the competition for the state championship. There was also the move into the final of the Copa Libertadores 2007. There the team lost 3-0 and 2-0 to the Argentine representative CA Boca Juniors .

SC Corinthians Paulista

For the new season, Menezes took over the position of head coach at the traditional club SC Corinthians Paulista , which was then playing in Série B , the second division. Right away, Menezes brought the club back to the Brazilian House of Lords after the team won the Série B in 2008. The club dominated the league and had achieved seventeen points more than the runner-up EC Santo André with 85 points . With the attackers Dentinho and Germán Herrera, Menezes formed a strong duo that put the team on the road to success. The football teacher remained successful in the period that followed.

After the club won the São Paulo state championship in 2009 , he led his team into the final of the Copa do Brasil. The team won the title after a 2-0 win and a 2-2 draw against SC Internacional. It was the club's third title win in this tournament. Despite being ranked 10th in the league, the club managed to qualify for the 2010 Copa Libertadores due to the cup win. In the group stage, the team remained without loss points except for the 1-1 draw against Independiente Medellín , but were eliminated in the round of 16 from the competition.

National team

In July 2010 it was announced that Menezes would be the new coach of the Brazilian national team . After a disappointing 2010 World Cup , he took over this position from Carlos Dunga . His successor at Corinthians was Adílson Batista .

However, Menezes was only second choice, as Muricy Ramalho had previously turned down the office. For his first international match as head coach, in which he gave most of the world championship drivers a break and did not call on them, Menezes nominated a total of eleven players with Victor , Renan , Jefferson , Rafael , David Luiz , Réver , Jucilei , Ganso , Ederson , André and Neymar who had previously been without a national team appearance. Many other players had so far only played a few games in the dress of the Seleção. On August 10, 2010, he was responsible for the first time for the Brazilian selection in the 2-0 win in the friendly against the USA.

On the way to the Copa América 2011 in Argentina, he nominated a total of 57 players. Then there was Ronaldo , who was in the squad for his farewell game against Romania on June 7, 2011. Menezes managed to rejuvenate the team on average within a year. The youngest players in the Copa América squad were 19-year-old Neymar and 18-year-old Lucas . In addition, there were two players, Ganso and Alexandre Pato , who would have been eligible to play for a CBF junior team. At the tournament Brazil were eliminated in the quarterfinals against Paraguay .

In 2011 and 2012 he won the Superclássico das Américas games with Brazil against Argentina , which are held by teams without their players playing abroad. In 2012, the Seleção could only prevail in the second leg in Buenos Aires on penalties. He was released two days later. In the 39 games under his leadership, Brazil won 25 times and recorded six draws and six losses. He also won the silver medal with Brazil at the 2012 Olympics . His successor was Luiz Felipe Scolari , who won the 2002 World Cup with the Seleção .

CR Flamengo

From June to September 2013 Menezes was the trainer of the CR Flamengo . He was the successor to Jorginho .

SC Corinthians Paulista

In January 2014, Menezes succeeded Tite as coach of SC Corinthians Paulista. At the end of the year Menezes left the club again.

Cruzeiro - China - Cruzeiro

In August 2015 Menezes took over the coaching position at Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte . He became the third coach that year. With the reigning champion, he finished eighth in the 2015 . He then went to China to Shandong Luneng Taishan . Menezes was released here in June 2016. The following month he took over the coaching position at Cruzeiro EC again . With the club, Menezes was able to win the Brazilian Cup in 2017 . On October 20, 2017, it was announced that his contract had been extended by two years until the end of 2019. During his time at Cruzeiro, he received an offer from Paraguay in 2018 to train their national team. He refused this. On February 26, 2019, Menezes was honored for 200 games with Cruzeiro. In April of that year he led the club to victory in the state championship. On August 7, 2019, Menezes was fired due to continued unsuccessfulness. On that day, Cruzeiro lost in the semi-final first leg of the 2019 Copa do Brasil at home to Internacional Porto Alegre 0-1. The week before they were eliminated in the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores 2019 after the group stage had been confidently finished as group winners. In the 2019 championship , at the time of the 13th matchday, the club was in 18th place on a relegation zone. Menezes led the team for three years and 12 days. In 234 games there were 112 wins, 69 draws and 53 defeats, 333 goals and 203 goals against.

Palmeiras São Paulo

On September 3, 2019, Palmeiras São Paulo announced the signing of Menezes until the end of 2021. The club had fired its coach two days earlier. At this point, the 17th matchday of the 2019 championship, Palmeiras was the defending champion in fifth place in the table.
