Finals
On August 24, 2017, a draw was drawn in the auditorium of the CBF in Rio de Janeiro to determine which club should play the first leg first and which has home rights in the second leg. The lot fell on home rights for Flamengo in the first leg and Cruzeiro in the second leg.
The away goals rule did not apply to the finals . This regulation has existed since the competition was held in 2015. It is intended to bring about a change in strategy aimed at ensuring that a team plays to a draw in the final.
The two finalists Flamengo Rio de Janeiro and Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte also contested the final of the cup in 2003 . It was the third time that there were recurring encounters in the final. Before this were 1995 and 2001 , the pairing Corinthians against Gremio and in 1996 and 1998 Cruzeiro against Palmeiras Sao Paulo . In the 2003 final, Cruzeiro won the second leg 3-1 after the first leg ended in a 1-1 draw.
First leg
Before the game, there were clashes between the military police and Flamengo fans at the stadium, who tried to get into the stadium without a ticket.
Flamengo goalkeeper Thiaguinho suffered a fracture in his left wrist during the game. Because of this, he was unable to play for the second leg.
