Copa do Brasil 2013

The 2014 Copa do Brasil was the 26th edition of this national soccer cup competition in Brazil. The Copa was hosted by the Brazilian Sports Federation, the CBF . The cup winner was qualified as a participant in the Copa Libertadores 2015 .

The association allowed the increase in the number of participants to 87 from the previous year. Likewise, the regulation that the cup winner should be determined over almost the entire year. The clubs not playing because of their participation in the Copa Libertadores 2014 entered the competition in the round of 16.

Eight teams that did not qualify for the round of 16 took part in the Copa Sudamericana 2014 . The starting places were allocated according to the current performance in the league competition.

71 participants came from the soccer championships of the states of Brazil or their cup competitions. In contrast to the previous year, the Association of the Federal District only got two instead of three starting places. For this, the Mato Grosso association was awarded one place more (three instead of two).

Season course

The competition started its season on February 19, 2014 and ended on November 26, 2014. At the end of the season, Atlético Mineiro won the title for the first time, making it the 15th title holder . The top scorer with six goals was Bill from Ceará SC , Gabriel Barbosa from FC Santos and Léo Gamalho from Santa Cruz FC .

Highest victories

mode

The mode consisted of a knockout system . For the first two rounds, the rule was that if a team wins an away first leg by at least two goals, there is no second leg.

The goal difference counted. In the event of a tie, the away goals rule was applied. If no winner was determined after these were used, this was determined in a penalty shoot-out.

draw

The draw for the first phase of the cup took place on January 10, 2014 in Rio de Janeiro . The 80 teams were divided into eight groups (A to H) of 10 clubs each. The CBF ranking was used to determine the order. Then the pairings between groups A x E; B x F; C x D x G and H drawn. As a special feature, Real Noroeste Capixaba FC and Rio Branco FC (AC) had to play a starting place in the group, although Rio Branco was better qualified as 61st in the CBF ranking.

There was a new draw for the second round, including the six starters from the Copa Libertadores 2014 .

Classification Copa Sudamericana

After completing the second round, the teams were determined which should continue to play in the Copa Sudamericana 2014 and which made it to the round of 16 in the Copa do Brasil. The best teams from the 2014 championship rounds, from Série A and Série B , who had already been eliminated in the first two rounds of the Copa do Brasil , moved to the Sudamericana . Places 1 to 16 from Série A were classified in the order in which they were placed, then the four best came from Série B and then the 17 through to Série A.

Sport Recife was already certain as the winner of the Copa Nordoeste as a participant in the Sudamericana.

Atlético Mineiro as the winner of the Copa Libertadores 2013 and Flamengo Rio de Janeiro as the defending champion, were automatically qualified for the round of 16.

Draw The pairings from the round of 16 were drawn on August 18, 2014. Two lottery pots were formed. Pot A included the qualifiers from the Copa Libertadores and the two best teams from the CBF ranking. The remaining eight teams came into Pot B. In both pots, all clubs were sorted according to the CBF ranking. The pots were then divided into four groups.

Tournament schedule After Gremio fans had racial incidents in the first leg between Gremio Porto Alegre and FC Santos , the club was initially excluded from further competition. On September 26th, the CBF reversed this decision and reduced the penalty to a deduction of three points. After Santos already had three points from the first leg, Gremio could not make up this deficit and the second leg did not take place.
