The Estádio Plácido Aderaldo Castelo , Castelão or Gigante da Boa Vista for short , in the Brazilian city of Fortaleza , the capital of the state of Ceará , is the largest and most modern football stadium in the state after the renovation (2013) with a capacity of 64,165 spectators . It is named after the governor who initiated the construction.
history
The Castelão is the home of the clubs Fortaleza EC , Ceará SC and the nationally insignificant Ferroviário AC . The Brazilian national team played seven international matches at Castelão between 1980 and 2002.
The state-owned stadium opened on November 11, 1973. For the inauguration, Ceará SC and Fortaleza EC met in front of 70,000 spectators for the derby , the Classico Rei ( German royal classics ) as the games of the two city rivals are called on site. The game ended 0-0. The first goal therefore had to wait a week until Erandy scored 1-0 in Ceará's game against EC Vitória on November 18 .
The attendance record dates back to August 27, 1980 when 118,496 spectators witnessed a 1-0 victory for the Brazilian national team against Uruguay . This was Brazil's first international match at Castelão.
The stadium is also occasionally used for cultural events. Among other things, Pope John Paul II made an “appearance” here in 1980 in front of 120,000 believers and visitors.
Reconstruction of World Cup 2014
The almost round, classic stadium was also used at the 2014 World Cup , as was the case with the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup . Before that, however, a complete renovation was necessary, which also increased the capacity to 64,165 seats.
In 2013 the stadium received, among other things, a new roof, a VIP lounge area including catering and a new playing field. The completely changed transport connection also includes an underground parking garage with 4,200 parking spaces. A total of around 192 million euros was invested in the new venue. On December 16, 2012, the stadium was inaugurated in the presence of Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff , Sports Minister Aldo Rebelo and Cearas Governor Cid Gomes . Rousseff symbolically carried out the first kick in the stadium. The first games were scheduled for the end of January 2013, when the Copa do Nordeste , a regional football tournament, took place.
