The Esporte Clube Vitória , commonly known in German-speaking countries as EC Vitória , is one of the two major football clubs from Salvador , the capital of the north-east Brazilian state of Bahia . The official club mascot is "Lelê Leãozinho", Lelê the little lion. Vitória has been playing in Serie B since 2018 after being relegated and promoted several times within the top two Brazilian divisions.
The club was founded in 1899 as Club de Cricket Victoria by the brothers Artur and Artêmio Valente, who got to know football while studying in England .
In terms of the national championships , the club was long behind local rivals EC Bahia , but has been able to reduce the gap with numerous victories since 2000.
In 2007 Vitória rose to the A series, three years later, however, the relegation was missed and Vitória rose again to the B series. In the 2012 season Vitória finished fifth and rose again. In the following years, the club was relegated in 2014, immediately promoted again in 2015, relegated in 2018 and has played in the Brazilian second division ever since.
Stadion
The club plays its home games in the club's own multi-purpose stadium, Estádio Manoel Barradas , which is usually only called Lixão for short . The stadium, built in 1986, with a capacity of around 36,000 spectators, is the largest on site since the Estádio Fonte Nova was demolished in 2008 (→ EC Bahia ). Vitória also occasionally used the Fonte Nova on days of major battles. The club's historic attendance record, almost 78,000 in December 1993 in the final first leg of the Brazilian championship against Palmeiras São Paulo , was achieved there.
A new stadium of the modern multi-purpose arena type has been in the planning stage since 2008 and should have a capacity of 30,000 spectators that can be expanded to 40,000.
