Alexander Baumjohann (born January 23, 1987 in Waltrop , North Rhine-Westphalia ) is a German football player . The attacking midfielder was signed by Australian first division club Sydney FC for the 2019/20 season .

Career

Born from the youth of Teutonia SuS Waltrop , Baumjohann joined the professional team at the age of 17 through the youth department of FC Schalke 04 . He initially played for the second team in the Oberliga Westfalen until he made his Bundesliga debut in the professional team on February 25, 2006 (23rd matchday) .

After only one game in the following season for FC Schalke 04, the attacking midfielder moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach . He played three times for Borussia in the 2006/07 season , was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga and promoted again for the 2008/09 season . His goal to make it 3-0 on August 30, 2008 (3rd matchday) in a 3-2 home win against Werder Bremen was not only his first in the Bundesliga , it was also voted Goal of the Month .

For the 2009/10 season Baumjohann moved to Bayern Munich on a free transfer . For the second half of the season he returned to Gelsenkirchen, whereupon on January 2, 2010 those responsible for FC Bayern Munich had reached an agreement with Schalke's manager and head coach Felix Magath . For Schalke 04 he completed 28 other Bundesliga games by the end of the 2011/12 season.

For the 2012/13 season Baumjohann moved to the second division club 1. FC Kaiserslautern , where he received a contract dated June 30, 2013 - with the option of two more years.

After the Palatinate's missed ascent, Baumjohann moved to Bundesliga promoted Hertha BSC free of charge , with whom he signed a contract that initially ran until June 30, 2016. After his cruciate ligament rupture in August 2013 , he returned to the game on March 28, 2014 and suffered another cruciate ligament rupture in August 2014. It then took some time before Baumjohann was able to fight his way back to the squad. In the 1-1 draw against Werder Bremen on matchday two of the 2015/16 season, he was back on the field for the first time.

After the end of the 2016/17 season, he left the club and joined the Brazilian club Coritiba FC . Baumjohann made his debut in the Brazilian Série A on October 18, 2017 against the Cruzeiro EC . On February 2, 2018, Baumjohann signed a contract with EC Vitória . On June 5, Vitória's sports director Jorge Macedo announced that the contract with Baumjohann, which was valid until July, would not be extended. Baumjohann played eleven point games for EC Vitória, in which he scored two goals.

In August 2018 he moved to the Australian first division club Western Sydney Wanderers . In the period from October 21, 2018 (1st matchday) to April 27, 2019 (27th matchday), he played 20 point games in the A-League, in which he scored three goals. For the 2019/20 season he was signed by league rivals Sydney FC .

National team

From September 30, 2003 to March 25, 2004 Baumjohann played seven times for the U-17 national team . He made his debut in Amel in a 0-0 draw against the national team of Belgium . He played his last game in Stuttgart in a 2-1 win against the national team from Slovakia .

For the U-21 national team Baumjohann played for the first time on March 27, 2009 in Ahlen in the 0: 4 defeat against the Netherlands and last time on March 31, 2009 in Paderborn in a 1-1 against Belarus.
