The 2011/12 Bundesliga was the 49th season of the top German division in men's football. Borussia Dortmund defended the championship on the 32nd of 34 match days .
The season began on August 5, 2011 with the reigning champions Borussia Dortmund's game against Hamburger SV (3: 1) and ended with the last game day on May 5, 2012. Between May 10 and May 15, 2012 the season closed Relegation between Hertha BSC and Fortuna Düsseldorf (1: 2 and 2: 2). From December 19, 2011 to January 20, 2012 the season was interrupted by the winter break.
Germany overtook Italy in the UEFA five-year standings in the preseason , which is why four teams qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time since the 2001/02 season : The top three of the season qualified directly for the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League , the Fourth placed took part in the play-offs for qualifying for the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League. Since both finalists of the DFB-Pokal 2011/12 were already qualified for the Champions League, in addition to the teams in fifth and sixth, the table seventh also qualified for the UEFA Europa League 2012/13 .
Autumn champions after the 17th matchday was FC Bayern Munich . Borussia Dortmund was the German champion on the 32nd matchday after a 2-0 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach , FC Bayern Munich was the runner-up on the same matchday and 1. FC Kaiserslautern was the first to be relegated.
Season course
Top group
Borussia Dortmund managed to defend the championship under coach Jürgen Klopp . The start to the season was not outstanding; The bottom was eleventh place in the table after match days five and six. After the fourteenth game day, the championship lead was taken over for one day, then again from the twentieth. From then on, BVB stayed at the top until the end of the season. The 81 points earned meant a new Bundesliga record, which, however, was surpassed by FC Bayern in the following season . For the first time in 49 years, a Bundesliga team exceeded the 80-point mark. Dortmund also won the DFB Cup for the first time since the 1988/89 season.
The Munich team under Jupp Heynckes started the season with a home defeat against Mönchengladbach. But already after the fourth game day they were at the top of the table. The autumn championship was also won; on the twentieth day of play, however, they lost the championship lead to Dortmund. A temporary third place could be corrected so that the runner-up went to Bayern.
The reigning cup winners FC Schalke 04 lost their first game 3-0 against Stuttgart and were bottom of the table after the first day together with Cologne. The table situation soon improved. On September 22nd, coach Ralf Rangnick resigned due to burnout syndrome . His successor was Huub Stevens , who had coached the squires from 1996 to 2002. Schalke then occupied third place in the table for large parts of the season and held this position in the final table. Striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar was the top scorer with 29 goals. The previous season's almost relegated Borussia Mönchengladbach played the best season since 1996 under Lucien Favre and was almost consistently in the top four. In the end, too, was fourth.
midfield
Bayer 04 Leverkusen started the season under coach Robin Dutt , who had previously been poached from SC Freiburg. However, the club played below its own requirements. Dutt was replaced on April 1st by the coaching team Sami Hyypiä and Sascha Lewandowski . In the end, the Werkself finished fifth. VfB Stuttgart reached sixth place under Bruno Labbadia . Hannover 96 finished the season under Mirko Slomka in seventh place and thus reached the European Cup as in the previous year. VfL Wolfsburg, trained by Felix Magath , finished the season in eighth place; he had spent most of the season doing it in lower places. Werder Bremen finished ninth under Thomas Schaaf in the end; the placement had gradually deteriorated in the course of the second half of the season and especially on the last few game days.
1. FC Nürnberg under Dieter Hecking took tenth place in the final table. At the winter break, the Franconians were still in 15th place. The most successful strikers were Tomáš Pekhart and Daniel Didavi , who had a series of six goals on five consecutive match days. After the season, defender Philipp Wollscheid left the club for Leverkusen. The seven million euro transfer fee meant a new transfer record for 1. FC Nürnberg. TSG 1899 Hoffenheim finished the season in eleventh place. Apart from fourth place in the table after game days six and seven, she had spent the whole year in midfield. Holger Stanislawski , who had just signed up before the season , was replaced by Markus Babbel on December 9th .
Relegation battle
There were similarities at SC Freiburg. Here, too, the new coach Marcus Sorg was dismissed in December and replaced by assistant coach Christian Streich . However, the Breisgauer were in the middle of the relegation battle at this point. From the twenty-third to the twenty-seventh match day they then managed to work their way up from last to thirteenth place in the table. By the end of the season, they had improved to twelfth place. FSV Mainz 05 had a strong start to the season under Thomas Tuchel and were leaders after the second match day. However, a crash followed, which leveled off around end place thirteen.
FC Augsburg spent its first year in the Bundesliga and played first-class again for the first time since the Oberliga Süd in 1963. However, he was involved in the relegation battle from the start. From the twelfth to the twenty-second match day, the Bavarian Swabians were consistently on a direct relegation zone, in the end they managed to save themselves to fourth place. Promotion coach Jos Luhukay resigned after the season, his successor was Markus Weinzierl . Hamburger SV played a poor season and spent six game days at the bottom of the table in the first half of the season. Coach Michael Oenning was replaced by Rodolfo Cardoso on September 19th . However, he did not have a trainer license, so on October 10th the sports director Frank Arnesen also took over the interim trainer position. Thorsten Fink was signed on October 17th . Under him, the league was achieved, but fifteenth place meant the worst final position ever achieved in the history of HSV.
Newcomer Hertha BSC replaced Markus Babbel with Michael Skibbe on December 18 . This had to give way on February 12th and was replaced by legendary coach Otto Rehhagel . The club had actually only developed into a relegation candidate towards the end of the season. On the last day of the match the improvement to the relegation place was achieved. In the play-offs, which were mainly noticed because of rioting by the fans, the relegation did not succeed. The 1. FC Köln rose after four years of membership in the Bundesliga as the penultimate again. Ståle Solbakken , who was newly signed before the season, was replaced by Frank Schaefer on April 16 . The Cologne team had their strongest phase in the middle of the season. Striker Lukas Podolski left the club after the season for Arsenal FC. 1. FC Kaiserslautern was also in a relegation battle throughout the season. On March 20, coach Marco Kurz was replaced by Krassimir Balakow . But even this could not prevent the Palatine from being consistently in last place from the 24th matchday onwards.

Relegation
The two relegation matches between the sixteenth day of the Bundesliga and the third in the 2. Bundesliga were held on 10 May 2012 and on 15 May 2012 and live on the TV channel Das Erste , the first HD and the pay-TV broadcaster Sky on the programs Sky Sport HD 1, Sky 3D and Sky Sport broadcast live. In the second game there was tumult in stoppage time when thousands of fans stormed the field before the final whistle and, among other things , lit Bengali fires . Referee Wolfgang Stark then interrupted the game. The fans were only able to be pushed back by the stewards and the police with great difficulty, and after an approximately 20-minute break, the game could be kicked off for another minute and a half of playing time. Before that, the game had to be interrupted twice because of Bengali fireworks that were ignited in the stands and thrown onto the field. Due to the incidents in the second leg, the DFB has started various investigations against the club, the organizers and also because of misconduct by individual players on both sides. After the game, Stark filed a criminal complaint for assault against Hertha BSC's Lewan Kobiaschwili , who is said to have hit him on the way to the cabin.

Fortuna Düsseldorf was only provisionally considered a Bundesliga club in the 2012/13 season for more than a month . Hertha BSC protested against the evaluation of the result on May 16.
The DFB confirmed the timely receipt of the protest and dealt with it on May 18. Since the taking of evidence took a long time, the verdict did not follow until May 21. Fortuna Düsseldorf's official promotion ceremony, which was scheduled for May 19, has been canceled.
Hertha BSC's objection was rejected in the first instance, but Hertha BSC appealed the decision. The DFB Federal Court confirmed the first instance judgment on May 25th.
Hertha announced in advance that they wanted to appeal again if they lost again, but the club members refused at a meeting. The next instances would have been the permanent court of arbitration and furthermore the CAS International Sports Court . On June 19, 2012, Hertha BSC announced that they would not lodge any further protest against the valuation of the second leg, making the final relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga official.
