The twelve teams first competed against each other twice in a first round and a second half. After that, the league was split, with the six top-ranked teams playing for the championship and international starting places, while the rest played for relegation. In these divided rounds, the teams competed against each other twice.

The top ranked team in the championship round became Welsh champions and qualified for the 2012/13 Champions League qualification . The runner-up was eligible to start directly in qualifying for the 2012/13 Europa League . The remaining teams in the championship round, as well as the best team in the relegation round, should play in a playoff tournament for last place in the Europa League qualification. Since Neath FC, who played in the championship round, was not eligible to participate for licensing reasons, the second-placed team from the relegation round, Aberystwyth Town , moved up.
