The 2011/12 Super League was the sixth season of the top Greek league in men's football. The championship was played among 16 clubs. The regular season started on August 27, 2011 and ended with the 30th matchday on April 22, 2012. After that, the playoffs for the international starting places took place until May 20. The clubs Panetolikos , PAS Ioannina and OFI Kreta replaced Panserraikos , Larisa and Asteras Tripolis , the relegated teams of the 2010/11 season .
For a long time it was not clear whether and with which teams the season would be played. A betting scandal created uncertainty. Several teams that had qualified for the competition in the previous season were denied their license. The first division club Iraklis Thessaloniki and the two second division teams Trikala FC and Diagoras Rhodos were affected . The first game day was played with just five matches.
After the two clubs AO Kavala and Olympiakos Volos had to relegate to the fourth Greek league in the wake of the betting scandal, the new season started with 13 clubs. Asteras Tripolis, who remained first class thanks to the withdrawal of their license from Iraklis Saloniki, was threatened with relegation to the Greek second division because of suspected match-fixing. On November 20, 2011, the field of participants was completed. The two second division clubs Doxa Dramas and APO Levadiakos got into the running of the game.

Play-offs
The clubs that found themselves in places two to five at the end of the Super League season played for the European starting places in the so-called play-offs, a mini elimination tournament. The clubs that occupied places two to four in the regular season received a point lead of 1/5 of the point lead on the fifth of the regular season (with commercial rounding): Panathinaikos Athens received due to the lead of 18 points a lead of 4 points (18/5 = 3.6, rounded to 4). The other two clubs each had a 2 point lead in the regular season and therefore started the playoffs without a bonus (2/5 = 0.4, rounded to 0).
Panathinaikos Athens qualified as play-off winners for participation in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions league . Originally, only the second and third placed had reached (different) qualifying rounds for the UEFA Europa League . However, since Atromitos Athens had reached the final of the Cup , and the opponent Olympiacos Piraeus had already qualified as champions for the Champions League, there was a postponement, so that the fourth-placed team also rose to the Europa League.
