The Toumba Stadium ( Greek Στάδιο Τούμπας ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Greek city of Thessaloniki , Central Macedonia . The Toumba Stadium is located in the 4th district of the city, in the Toumba district of the same name, near the city center. It is the largest privately owned stadium in Greece and the third largest football stadium in the country. The football team PAOK Saloniki plays its home games here. The official name is PAOK Stadium , but the venue is generally known as the Toumba Stadium .

history

In 1957 the site was purchased for 1.5 million GRD . Construction began in the spring of 1958. In September 1959 the stadium was not yet complete, the south curve was missing, but still ready to take part in the newly founded Greek league . Equipped with a natural grass field and a capacity of 14,000 spectators.

Since then it has been expanded again and again, so that the original capacity increased from 20,000 in the next few years to 33,000 and finally to 45,000 in the 1970s. The attendance record that still exists today dates back to 1976, when 45,252 spectators watched the match between PAOK and AEK Athens . The expansion of the stadium included other sports facilities that were important for the club, such as the gym under the north stand, the athletics facility around the playing field and the floodlights .

In 1998, all standing seats were converted, which resulted in a reduction in capacity to 32,000 seats. The current number of seats of 28,701 was reached when the stadium was renovated again in 2000, as the main aim was to enlarge the security zones.

Due to the consideration of the city of Thessaloniki for the Olympic football tournaments of the Olympic Summer Games 2004 , modernization measures were decided. During the games, the stadium acted as a training facility. Construction work began in the summer of 2003 and lasted for a year. In addition to a new roof for the main grandstand and new seat shells, a new turf was laid. In addition, behind the main grandstand (blocks 1 and 2) a new four-storey building complex was built, which towers above the stadium and houses boxes on the top floor. New VIP and media rooms were also created in the building.

The stadium is owned by the PAOK Saloniki sports club and has been working towards a new building at the same location for years. However, the tight financial situation of the association has not yet allowed such plans to be realized.
