In the 2011/12 season, as in previous years, sixteen clubs competed against each other in a total of 30 rounds. Each team played once at home and once away against each of the fifteen other teams. In the Premijer Liga, a total of sixteen teams played for three international starting places, a Champions League place, as well as two Europa League places for the placement and one for the cup winner. In addition, the last two had to relegate to the second highest division, the first division.

Fan riots

On the 8th matchday of the current season, the derby match between champions FK Borac Banja Luka and cup winners FK Željezničar Sarajevo took place in the Gradski Stadium Banja Luka. When the cup winners from Sarajevo scored the 0: 1 in the 34th minute of the game, fans of Banja Luka stormed the field and ran towards the guest fans' sector. Because of this, the players fled into the locker room, and the referee then ended the game.

The Bosnian association then punished the host FK Borac Banja Luka with three ghost games and an additional 10,000  KM (approx. € 5,100) fine. Due to ongoing riots between rival supporters, the association decided that guest fans should not be allowed to visit organized fans during games.
