← UEFA Champions League 2010/11 | |
The 2011/12 UEFA Champions League was the 20th season of the most important European competition for club teams in football under this name and the 57th overall. 76 clubs from 52 regional associations took part in the competition. Only Liechtenstein did not have a representative.
The season began with the first qualifying round on June 28, 2011 and ended with the final on May 19, 2012 in Munich's Allianz Arena , which was selected by the UEFA Executive Committee in January 2009. There, Chelsea defeated FC Bayern Munich 4: 3 on penalties after they had been drawn 1: 1 after 90 and 120 minutes.
Lionel Messi was the top scorer for the fourth year in a row with 14 goals.
qualification
During the draws, the teams were divided into seeded (stronger) and half unset (weaker) teams according to their club coefficients (given in brackets) and drawn among each other.
1st qualifying round
The draws for the first two qualifying rounds took place simultaneously on June 20, 2011. The first legs took place on June 28th, the second legs on June 5th and 6th. July 2011. Since the defending champions are also qualified for the Champions League through their national league, the champions of nations 48 and 49 of the UEFA five-year championship (Faroe Islands / Northern Ireland) advanced to qualifying round 2, while the third game was omitted in round 1.

Losing teams move to the play-offs of the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League .
Since the draw for round Q3 was already carried out on July 15, 2011 and the second qualifying round has not yet been completed, the coefficient of the club seeded was used for the winner of the match. The 20 champions in the champions path were divided into 2 regional groups before the draw and then the seeded against the unset teams in each group. The game was played on 26./27. July (first leg) and 2/3 August 2011 (second legs).

Group stage
32 teams from 18 nations take part in the group stage. 22 teams were directly qualified, plus ten clubs (five each via the champions path and the placement path) from the qualifying rounds.
The group winners and runners-up qualify for the round of 16, the thirds in the group play in the round of 32 of the UEFA Europa League , and the fourths are eliminated from the competition. If two or more teams are tied after the group matches, the placement is determined by the following criteria:
- Number of points in direct comparison
- Goal difference in direct comparison
- Number of goals in direct comparison
- Number of away goals in direct comparison
- If, after applying criteria 1-4, two teams still occupy the same place in the table, criteria 1-4 are reapplied for these teams. If this does not result in a definitive placement, criteria 6–8 will be applied.
- Goal difference from all group matches
- higher number of goals scored
- Club coefficients
The 32 teams qualified for the group stage were divided into four lottery pots of eight teams on the basis of their club coefficient (KK), and one team from each lottery pot was drawn into one of the eight groups (A to H); Teams from the same association could not be drawn into the same group. The FC Barcelona was led as defending No. 1 on the seedings, regardless of its coefficients. The draw took place on August 25, 2011 in Monaco and resulted in the following groups:

final
"Finale at home"
Many fans of FC Bayern Munich (FCB) also called the final played in the home stadium “Finale dahoam” ( Bavarian for final at home ). No team has been able to play such a final since the introduction of the Champions League for the 1992/93 season, but in the previous European Cup: Real Madrid ( 1957 ), Inter Milan ( 1965 ), both of which won, and AS Roma ( 1984 ) who lost on penalties.
Starting situation before the game
Both teams had to do without regular players: FCB missed defenders David Alaba , Holger Badstuber and Luiz Gustavo (yellow card suspensions); Branislav Ivanović , Raúl Meireles , Ramires (yellow card suspension) and John Terry (red card suspension) were absent from Chelsea .
Course of the game
The FCB had a higher ball possession rate and came to significantly more corner kicks (16-0 up to the 88th minute). Thomas Müller and Mario Gómez missed scoring opportunities; Arjen Robben hit the post. Only in the 34th minute was Chelsea's first shot on Bayern's goal. In the 53rd minute, Franck Ribéry scored a goal, which was not given due to a clear offside position. In the 83rd minute, Thomas Müller finally scored a header from a Toni Kroos cross. Müller put the ball on, it flew over the 1.96 meter tall goalkeeper Petr Čech and dripped from the crossbar into the goal. Chelsea coach Roberto Di Matteo replaced striker Fernando Torres and Chelsea began to play more offensively. Chelsea took their first corner in the 88th minute; Didier Drogba scored a header. The game went into extra time with 1: 1. In the 95th minute, Ribéry penetrated the Chelsea penalty area and was fouled by Drogba; the referee gave a foul penalty. Goalkeeper Čech saved the penalty shot by Arjen Robben. After 120 minutes, the penalty shootout had to bring the decision. Bayern initially led after Manuel Neuer parried Juan Mata's first penalty, but after two missed penalties from Ivica Olić (saved by Čech) and Bastian Schweinsteiger (deflected by Čech to the inside post) Chelsea were ahead. Didier Drogba converted the decisive final penalty.
