Daniel Andre Sturridge (born September 1, 1989 in Birmingham ) is an English football player . The striker has been without a club since March 2020.

Career

In the club

Sturridge began playing football at Coventry City . There he was noticed by those responsible for Manchester City , who directed him to their youth department in 2003. Here he went through the youth teams and came in February 2007 in the 0-2 home defeat against Reading FC as a substitute for Georgios Samaras to his debut in the Premier League . In the following years he was used irregularly for the club from Manchester.

After his contract expired in the summer of 2009, he moved to league rivals FC Chelsea , with whom he signed a four-year contract. With Chelsea he won both the championship and the FA Cup in 2010 . In January 2011, he was loaned to Bolton Wanderers to gain match practice. After his return, Sturridge became a regular under coach André Villas-Boas .

On January 2, 2013 Sturridge moved within the league to Liverpool FC . In his first competitive game against fifth division club Mansfield Town , he scored 1-0 after five minutes. In the 2013/14 season he scored 22 goals this season, placing him in second place in the Premier League scorers list behind striker Luis Suárez (31 goals) and contributing to qualifying for the 2014/15 Champions League season .

At the end of the 2018/19 season , the expiring contract with Liverpool FC was not extended and Sturridge was hired by the Turkish club Trabzonspor . On March 2, 2020, the club and Sturridge split amicably after it was revealed that the player had been banned worldwide due to illicit betting until June 17, 2020.

National team

Daniel Sturridge made his debut for England's national team on November 15, 2011 in a 1-0 win over Sweden.

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the English squad . He made his first appearance in the second game against Wales. He came on as a substitute at half time and scored the 2-1 winner for England in stoppage time. After that he was on the starting line-up for the remaining two games. The team was eliminated in the round of 16 against Iceland.

Sturridge's grandparents are from Jamaica , both on their maternal and paternal sides. He is the son of former soccer player Mike Sturridge and the nephew of former soccer players Dean and Simon Sturridge. Furthermore, Daniel Sturridge is a devout Christian and reads the Bible.
