qualification

The division into the individual qualifying rounds is based on the UEFA access list. The order of the associations is determined by the association coefficients of the UEFA five-year rating 2016/2017. If the defending champions of the previous year who qualified for the Champions League have already qualified via the national competitions, there will be subsequent postponements in the published access list.

The teams with the higher club coefficient of the 2017/18 UEFA five-year ranking are seeded. If the club coefficient is the same, the order is determined by the rating points achieved by the teams in the previous season or in the following years. If the previous round has not yet been completed at the time of the draw for the respective qualifying round, the higher value of the two teams in the respective outstanding pairings will be used for the seeding list.

Preliminary round

The draw for the preliminary round took place on June 12, 2018. The semi-finals on June 26 and the final on June 29, 2018 were played at the Victoria Stadium in Gibraltar. The three losers switched to the second qualifying round (Champions Path) of the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League , the winner to the first qualifying round of the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League.

  7. higher number of goals scored
  8. higher number of away goals scored
  9. higher number of wins
  10. higher number of away wins

The draw for the quarter-finals took place on March 15, 2019 in Nyon without restrictions. There were no seeded clubs, and clubs from one association could also meet. The first to be drawn always received home rights in the first leg. As Manchester United and Manchester City could not play in Manchester on the same evening or two consecutive evenings, according to local authorities, Manchester United had to play the first leg at home, contrary to the draw. The first legs took place on April 9 and 10, the second legs on April 16 and 17, 2019. For the first time since 2006 , no German team made it into the last eight.

Semifinals

The semi-finals were drawn on March 15, 2019 (with the quarter-finals) in Nyon. The first legs took place on April 30 and May 1, the second legs on May 7 and 8, 2019. Tottenham Hotspur made it into a Champions League semi-final for the first time, Ajax Amsterdam for the first time since 1997 . While Liverpool FC repeated the semi-finals from the previous year , FC Barcelona moved into the round of the last four for the first time since 2015 , when the title was finally won.

Both semifinals were characterized by chases to catch up: FC Barcelona won the first leg at Camp Nou 3-0, but Liverpool FC made it into the final for the second time in a row after a 4-0 win at Anfield . It was the fourth time in Champions League history that a team was able to make up a 3-goal deficit from the first leg - for the first time in a semi-final.
