Olympique Lyon celebrates the victory

The 2018/19 UEFA Women's Champions League was the eighteenth draw of the European championship competition for women's football clubs and the tenth under this name. 60 teams from 48 countries competed for the title. The competition began with the first games of the qualifying round on August 7, 2018 and ended with the final on May 18, 2019, which was played in the Ferencváros Stadium in Budapest .

The defending champions were the women of Olympique Lyon , who won the title for the fourth time in a row and for the sixth time in total.

Teams

60 clubs from 48 nations took part in the 2018/19 UEFA Women's Champions League. This includes the champions and runners-up of the twelve strongest nations as well as the national champions of 36 other UEFA members. The UEFA five-year rating was used to determine the top twelve national associations . The national champions of the twelve strongest associations - including the defending champion - as well as the runner-ups of the eight strongest national associations received a bye and only intervened in the sixteenth-finals in the competition. The remaining national champions and the remaining four runners-up had to first take part in a qualifying round.

mode

First, the clubs from the worst-placed associations play the participants in a qualifying round for the main round, in which 21 other clubs are added. The games of the main round up to and including the semi-finals are played in the first and second legs. The team that scores more goals in both games will advance to the next round. If both teams score the same number of goals, the number of away goals decides. If the number of away goals is the same, the second leg is extended. If both teams score the same number of goals in extra time, the away team wins due to the higher number of away goals scored. If no goals are scored, the match will be decided on penalties. The final will be decided in one game. In the event of a tie, extra time follows and then, if necessary, a penalty shoot-out.

particularities

  • After Lyon, which did this in 2009/10, Barcelona also managed to bring both the women's and the men's teams to the semi-finals this season. In both cases, only the women made it to the final, which they couldn't win.
  • Ada Hegerberg is the first player who managed a "flawless" hat trick in a Champions League final and the first ever player to score three goals in a Champions League final. With a total of five goals, she replaced Martina Müller , who scored three goals in two finals, as the record final scorer.
  • The Spaniards missed Kheira Hamraoui in the final, a French woman who moved from Lyon to Barcelona in 2018, who scored the winning goal in the semifinals in Munich, but was sent off in the second leg with a yellow-red card and was therefore suspended at the season highlight.
