The 2008/09 UEFA Women's Cup is the eighth edition of the European championship competition for women's football clubs . The competition was held under this name for the last time, as the name changed to UEFA Women's Champions League, which was associated with a change in the mode of play, from the 2009/10 season .
The defending champion was 1. FFC Frankfurt. In addition, another German team took part in the tournament, FCR 2001 Duisburg. With 43 participants, there were two fewer clubs than in the previous year. Due to the Caucasus War , the Georgian participant Iveria Khashuri withdrew his team. In the finals, FCR 2001 Duisburg won 6-0 and 1-1 against Russian champions Zvezda 2005 Perm and won the UEFA Women's Cup for the first time.
36 teams take part in the first qualifying round. At the draw on July 3, 2008, the clubs will be divided into nine groups of four teams each. The group winners qualify for the 2nd round. The game will be played from September 4th to 9th, 2008. The organizers of the tournaments are listed for the respective group.
In the second round, the defending champion and the national champions of the six strongest national associations intervene in the action. In a draw, the 16 teams are divided into four groups of four teams each. The group winners and runners-up qualify for the quarter-finals. The game will be played from October 9th to 14th, 2008.
Tournament in Kalush ( Ukraine ). The first matchday was postponed by UEFA to October 10, 2008 after the luggage of the Brøndby IF players was left behind at Vienna Airport.
The quarter-finals were on 5./6. and 12./13. November 2008. The second leg between Lyon and Bardolino was played on November 18. For defending champions Frankfurt the end came in the all-German duel with two defeats against Duisburg.
The finals took place on May 16 and 22, 2009. For both teams it was their first participation in the final. Perm was the first Russian team to make it to the final. Zvezda 2005 Perm played its home game in Kazan because the artificial turf in the home stadium is not approved by UEFA . Duisburg avoided the second leg in the MSV Arena. The 6: 0 for Duisburg in the first leg is the highest victory in a final game to date.
