Alexandra "Alex" Popp (born April 6, 1991 in Witten ) is a German soccer player . The defender , midfielder and striker is under contract with Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg . In 2014 and 2016 she was voted Germany's footballer of the year by sports journalists . She has played regularly for the German national team since 2010 and was appointed captain on February 19, 2019.

Alexandra Popp began her career at FC Schwarz-Weiß Silschede in Gevelsberg and played there in mixed teams up to the age limit of 14 years. She later moved to 1. FFC Recklinghausen . With the association league team, she only just failed in 2008 when she was promoted to the Regionalliga West . For the 2008/09 season she moved to FCR 2001 Duisburg and turned down an offer from the top French club Olympique Lyon . On September 7th, 2008 she made her Bundesliga debut against Herford SV and scored her first Bundesliga goals on September 28th in an 8-0 win against TSV Crailsheim . At the 2010 DFB Indoor Cup she was the tournament's top scorer with five goals.

For the 2012/13 season, Popp moved to VfL Wolfsburg with her club mate Luisa Wensing . With Wolfsburg, she won the triple of the German championship , DFB Cup and Champions League in her first season . A year later, she won the 2013/14 UEFA Women's Champions League again with Wolfsburg . This was followed by the “final” of the German championship in Wolfsburg . Last year's champions VfL Wolfsburg were able to defend their title with a win on the last match day against the previously unbeaten 1. FFC Frankfurt . Frankfurt only needed a draw to win the championship, while Wolfsburg had to win. Popp scored the winning goal in the 89th minute. Wolfsburg was again victorious in the DFB Cup .

In the 2017/18 UEFA Women's Champions League , she reached the final against Olympique Lyon with Wolfsburg . After 90 goalless minutes it went into overtime, in which Pernille Harder put the women in the lead in the 93rd minute. Three minutes later Popp received the yellow-red card and then the French scored four more goals.

National team

In May 2008 Popp became European champion with the U-17 national team and scored the decisive 2-0 in the final against France. In February 2010 she was called up for the first time in the squad of the national team and made her debut on February 17, 2010 against North Korea. At the Algarve Cup she scored her first two international goals in a 7-0 win against Finland on February 26th. At the U-20 Women's World Cup in Germany in 2010 , she not only won the title with her team, but also scored in every game. With a total of ten tournament goals, she was awarded the “Golden Shoe” for the best goalscorer and the “Golden Ball” for the best player of the tournament by FIFA after the tournament. With her 10 goals she is together with Sydney Leroux and Christine Sinclair also the record scorer at U-20 world championships .

In 2011 Popp was part of the German World Cup squad and was used in all four games, where she was substituted on. In the 17-0 record victory in the European Championship qualification on November 19, 2011 against Kazakhstan , she and Célia Šašić scored four goals. She is the seventh German player to score four goals in an international match. She was unable to take part in the European Championship finals due to an ankle injury.

On May 24, 2015, Popp was appointed to the final squad for the 2015 World Cup in Canada by national coach Silvia Neid . She was used in six games at the World Cup and scored the last goal in the 10-0 win against Ivory Coast . In the end, the German team finished fourth after their first defeat against England .

In 2016 Popp was accepted into the national team for the Olympic soccer tournament in Brazil. She played in all six games of the tournament (one substitution, one substitution) and contributed one goal and three assists. By beating Sweden 2-1 in the final , she won the gold medal. and received the silver bay leaf on November 1st, 2016 .

The European Championship in 2017 in the Netherlands missed Popp as early as 2013 due to injury.

Popp led the German team onto the field as captain at the 2019 World Cup in France . In the round of 16 against Nigeria , she scored the opening goal with a header in her hundredth appearance for the national team . Due to a 1: 2 defeat in the subsequent quarter-finals against Sweden, they were eliminated prematurely and were also unable to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games.

On August 31, 2019, she scored three goals, including her 50th international goal, in a 10-0 win in the first qualifying game for Euro 2022 against Montenegro .

Popp was the only student in the football class at the Berger Feld comprehensive school in Gelsenkirchen, which was certified by the DFB as an elite football school . She learned and trained with young players from FC Schalke 04 . She left school after the twelfth year with a technical diploma and did an annual internship as a physiotherapist. Furthermore, she successfully completed a three-year apprenticeship as a zoo keeper at the Essehof Zoo .

In some interviews, she stated that she was a fan of Borussia Dortmund .
