Silschede is a district of the town of Gevelsberg in the Ennepe-Ruhr district in North Rhine-Westphalia . Until 1969 Silschede was an independent municipality .

geography

Silschede is located in the north of the urban area of ​​Gevelsberg in the Niederbergisch-Märkisch hill country . The center of Silschede, which is also known as the "Höhendorf" due to its location, is about two kilometers north of the Gevelsberg town center. Other smaller settlements in the area of ​​the district of Silschede include Behrenbruch, Büffel, Ellinghausen and Ilberg.

history

Silschede was originally a Westphalian peasantry . The first documentary mention comes from the treasure book of Grafschaft Mark from 1486. ​​Since the 15th century, hard coal mining has been practiced in Silschede , initially in open-cast mining and later via tunnels. The Sengsbank colliery existed from 1754 to 1831. The United Trappe colliery existed from 1842 to 1925 on Esborner Strasse north of the Silscheder town center . Since the 19th century Silschede formed a rural community in the office of Volmarstein in the district of Hagen in the Westphalian administrative district of Arnsberg . In 1929 Silschede came to the Ennepe-Ruhr district. During the Second World War , the Silschede railway tunnel was used to move German armaments production underground .

On January 1, 1970, Silschede became part of the town of Gevelsberg through the law to reorganize the Ennepe-Ruhr district .

The Gevelsberg junction of federal motorway 1 is in Silschede . The federal highway 234 crosses Silschede in an east-west direction. From 1934 to 1980 the Witten – Schwelm railway ran through the 845 m long Silscheder Tunnel. The Schee – Silschede railway line, opened in 1889, was shut down in 1989. The Schlebusch-Harkort coal railway also ran through Silschede.
