Eznik von Kolb ( Armenian Եզնիկ Կողբացի , Esnik Koghbazi ) (* in Koghb , today in the province of Iğdır , Turkey ) was an Armenian church father of the 5th century and bishop or archpriest ( Vardapet ) of Bagrewand .

Eznik was born in what was then the Tayk region in northern Armenia . He was a student of Isaac the Great and Mesrophe . At the request of his teachers, he went to Edessa , later to Constantinople , to improve his knowledge in various scientific fields and to collect or copy Greek and Syrian manuscripts of the Bible and writings of the church fathers. He returned to Armenia after the Council of Ephesus in 431 and is most likely identical with the historical figure Eznik, Bishop of Bagrevand .

He is counted among the circle of holy Bible translators and is considered one of the classics of ancient Armenian literature . His main work Elc Alandoc ("Against the Sects") was published for the first time in 1762 in Smyrna . An improved translation comes from the Mechitarists in Venice from 1826 and 1865. An indifferent French translation comes from LeVaillant de Florival, "Réfutation des différentes sectes" (Paris, 1853). A good German translation comes from JM Schmid, "Eznik von Kolb, Wider die Irrlehren" (Leipzig, 1900). It is an essential source for Zurvanism , a contemporary trend in Persian religion and mythology.
