Tuzluca ( Armenian Կոգհբ Koghb ; Russian Когб ; Kurdish : Elîdizk ; formerly Kulp ) is a city and a district in the Iğdır province in the extreme east of Turkey , on the border with Armenia . The city is home to about 40 percent of the district's population. The current name of the city refers to the large salt deposits (tr: Tuz ) in the area.

In 1886, all of the town's 3,074 inhabitants were Armenian . Since the genocide of the Armenians , the population of the city and the surrounding area has mainly consisted of Kurds and Azerbaijanis .

The district of Tuzluca already existed when Turkey was founded in 1923 in what was then the province of Kars. Today it lies in the west of today's Iğdır Province and borders on the provinces of Kars and Ağrı , and in parts also on Armenia. The district has the lowest population density in the province and, in addition to the capital Tuzluca ( Merkez ), consists of 81 villages ( Köy ), of which only the village of Güllüce has over 1,000 inhabitants (1,085). The average population per village is only 183 (in the entire province: 446).
