Aralık ( Kurdish : Başan ) is a city and a district in the Iğdır Province in the far east of Turkey . The city is home to 29 percent of the district's population and forms the easternmost point of Turkey. The city is located on the eastern slope of the Ararat a few kilometers from the Turkish-Armenian border. The previous name was Başköy.

The district of Aralık has borders with Iran , Armenia and Nakhchivan and borders in the south with the Turkish province of Ağrı . In addition to the city of Aralık as the administrative center ( Merkez ), there are 21 villages in the district, three of which have more than 1,000 inhabitants: Gödekli (2,709), Hasanhan (2,307) and Yukarıçamurlu (1,418). The average village population is 720 people. The county’s economy depends heavily on the Dilucu- Nakhichevan border crossing .

history

In the Middle Ages, Aralık was part of the Bagratid Empire . Thereafter, the region was the scene of the wars between the Ottomans and Safavids for several centuries . In 1746 it became part of the Yerevan Khanate , which was a vassal state of Persia. After the Russo-Persian War from 1826 to 1828 and the Peace of Turkmanchai , Aralık went to the Russians. Within the Russian Empire, Aralık was part of the Armenia Oblast and later the Yerevan Governorate . For a short period from 1917 to 1920, Aralık was part of the Democratic Republic of Armenia . With the Treaty of Kars , Aralık became part of Turkey. Until 1960, Aralık was a Bucak within the Iğdır District of Kars Province. From 1960 to 1992 it was a district within the province of Kars. It has belonged to Iğdır since 1992.
